Influence of different levels of irrigation and depth of cultivation on yield and nutrient uptake (NPK) by wheat

A study was undertaken in a sandy loam grey floodplain soil of Sonatola (Bangladesh) series to determine the effect to different water regime and depth of cultivation on the yield and nutrient (NPK) uptake by wheat. The results indicated that irrigation treatments had no effect on the yield and yield components of wheat. The reason was attributed to the presence of the water table at a shallow depth. The depth of cultivation treatments had significant effect on the yield and several yield components. Nutrient content (NPK) of plant samples was not significantly affected by the irrigation treatments. But NPK uptake was always high in deep tillage treatments indicating that wheat roots penetrated deeper in these treatments and utilized the sub-soil nutrients leading to the production of increased yield.
