Sugarcane smut [Ustilago scitaminea] resistance trial in Belize

A field trial of 9 commercial varieties and one new variety was conducted from August 1978 to October 1979 and included 2 cane cycles: plantcane and a first ratoon. In highly susceptible varieties smut infection promoted heavy tillering. Based on the results the varieties recommended for commercial growing were: POJ2878, PR1048 and B59136. Q80 was moderately resistant but is highly susceptible to rust. BJ5924, BJ5721, HJ5741, B52298, BJ5927 and BJ6643 were susceptible to smut
