Micropropagation of African violet from petiole and leaf blade tissue

African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha Wendl.) plants were produced from petiole segments and from leaf blade sections. Both types of tissue were cultured aseptically on a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing a naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) and adenine sulfate. The segments produced several shoots in about 8 weeks from culture, which when subcultured on fresh medium devoid of growth substances, developed into rooted plantlets which reached transplantable size in 8-10 weeks from transfer. Rooted plantlets were then transplanted in pots containing a sterile soil mixture (2:1 v/v of peat moss and forest soil) where they grew to flowering within four months. With this technique, more than 500 plants could be produced from a single petiole or leaf blade within a period of 7-8 months
