Fecundity of horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus (L. 1758) off the Portuguese coast

The potential fecundity of horse mackerel during a spawning season in Portuguese waters was estimated by counting mature oocytes in 107 ovaries at stage 4 of maturity. There was considerable variation in the number of oocytes produced by fish of similar size. Nevertheless, the potential fecundity for the stock of fish from the western coast was significantly less than that for the stock from the southern coast. The relationship between fecundity and the cube of fish length is: fecundity= 1.716 x length cubed + 168,900 for the western stock, and fecundity= 2.334 x length cubed + 170,400 for the southern stock
