Body weight at calving and its association with reproduction traits in crossbred cows

A total of 1003 records on body weight at calving, postpartum oestrus period (PPOP), Service period (SP) and number of services per conception (NS/C) of 421 Friesian x Hariana (FH), Brown Swiss x Hariana (BH), Jersey x Hariana (JH) halfbred cows and their second generation crosses having 75% exotic inheritance from two different breeds were analysed. The overall least-squares means were 420.8, 403.5, 333.1 and 377.5 kg for body weight at calving; 64.6, 61.4, 53.4 and 105.5 days for PPOP; 105.8, 129.0, 100.7 and 187.9 days for SP and 3.3, 2.6, 1.9 and 2.7 for NS/C for FH, BH, JH and Second Generation crossbred groups respectively. Parity significantly influenced only the body weight at calving, PPOP and SP in all the genetic groups. Body weight at calving had negative significant correlation with PPOP, and SP in all the groups and positive and significant correlation with NS/C in only FH group. PPOP was positively and significantly associated with SP in all the groups but positively and significantly with NS/C in second generation crossbreds only
