Residual effect of simazine and atrazine applied to two successive fodder maize crops on berseem [Trifolium alexandrinum L.]

The residual effect of simazine and atrazine in maize-maize-berseem fodder rotation was studied for two years in a field experiment conducted at Ludhiana. In the first fodder maize crop, simazine and atrazine at 1.0 kg/ha gave an effective control of weed and produced fodder yield on a par with two hand weedings. In the second crop of fodder maize raised after the first crop receiving 1 or 2 kg simazine/atrazine, application of even 0.5 kg/ha of simazine/atrazine was sufficient. Simazine at 2.0 kg/ha proved phytotoxic to both the maize crops but atrazine at this dose was quite safe. Simazine and atrazine applied at even 2.0 kg/ha both the successive maize fodder crops has no residual phytotoxic effect on the growth and green fodder yield of the succeeding berseem crop
