Heterosis in relation to general and specific combining ability effects in safflower was studied using three females and five males. Considerable heterotic effect over the parental mean, better parent and the check variety was observed for all the characters but the magnitude differed for different characters. The highest magnitude of useful heterosis (heterosis over check) was observed in respect of the number of seeds/capitulum followed by yield/plant and weight of seeds/capitulum. Tara x FT-2 was the highest yielding hybrid (46.37 g) which showed significant superiority over the check variety, S4. Other promising crosses for high yield and oil content were Tara x EC-32012, N-7 x BLY-1020 and N-7 x NS-1016. Implications of heterosis in relation to combining ability effects in safflower breeding have been discussed.
