Utility of sulfobromophthalein (BSP) disappearance time to assess the functional status of liver in crossbred cow calves

The sulfobromophthalein (Bromsulphalein, BSP) liver function test was carried out in 5 healthy crossbred cow calves aged 5 to 6 months and weighing 70 to 108 kg. The BSP was administered intravenously at 5 mg/kg body weight and the rate of disappearance, i.e. per cent retention of dye, was determined at fixed intervals. Maximum disappearance of dye occurred in the first 10 min (79.9 +- 2.2%) and it gradually slowed down as the post administration time increased. Disappearance of dye in different time intervals did not follow a similar pattern. For a cow calf, the body weight of which can easily be determined; the method which determines the BSP% retention is a reliable liver function test for a normal cow calf. A calf with 5% or more retention of dye 45 min after BSP administration should be considered suggestive of liver disfunction
