Biology of the spherical mealybug Nipaecoccus viridis (Newstead) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) reared on lemon seedlings and potato sprouts

Preliminary greenhouse tests were conducted to investigate the development of the spherical mealybug on lemon seedlings, cotton, coleus, oleander, geranium, tomato and eggplant. The mealybug developed on the first three hosts, and was enforced to develop on the fourth by repeated infestations. Average number of eggs laid per female; average incubation period; hatching percentage; comparison of female and male nymphs instars average duration; average pre-oviposition period of the females and sex ratio on each of the lemon seedlings and the potato sprouts were studied and estimated. No parthenogenic reproduction was detected; virgin females produced sex pheromone attractant to the adult males. Behavior of the different developmental stages was studied
