Local grasses and tree leaves had been used by goats and sheep in Malaysia for centuries. Among other grasses which are consumed by these animals include Paspalum conjugatum (buffalo grass), Ottochloa nodosa (slender panic grass) and Axonopus compressus (carpet grass). These grasses can be found all over Malaysia. Nephrolepis biserrata ('paku larat') dan Mikania cordata oil palm plantations and were readily eaten by goats and sheep. Leaves of trees such as Artocarpus heterophyllus (jack fruit) and Fagraea fragrans ('tembusu') were always being fed to goats as a supplement. Proximate analysis of several species of forages eaten by goats and sheep showed that dry matter and crude protein varied widely. The potential for the integration of these two ruminants with plantation crops such as rubber, oil palm, coconut and orchard was very good as most of the natural vegetation in those plantations was good source of feeds
