Performance evaluation of grocery product pallets from coconut lumber [Philippines]

The average cost of producing a pallet from cocosoft is P57.33; and from tanguile, P157.17, based on 1985 prices. Cost analysis showed that the cocosoft pallet cost P39.13 less than cocohard pallet and P99.84 less than the tanguile pallet. Test results showed that pallets made from coconut, in general, compare favorably with those from tanguile (Shorea polysperma), the traditionally-used species. However, cocohard pallets were inferior to both cocosoft and tanguile pallets. In the drop test, pallets from cocohard fared better than those from cocosoft and tanguile. At the lowest height of drop, the tolerance of drop stresses of cocohard pallets decreased more rapidly as height of drop increased. In the incline-impact test test, cocosoft and tanguile pallets remained relatively undamaged after dropping 10 times from a height or 548 cm, while cocohard pallets were slightly damaged. The analysis of variance for the incline-impact test showed that materials used were significant sources of variations in resistance to incline-impact damage. Test results showed that it is the height of drop and not the amount of moisture content (MC) of the materials used in fabricating the pallet that significantly affects its resistance to damage from drop. The simple correlation analysis showed that neither the weight nor the MC was significantly correlated with the number of drop cycles to render the pallets unserviceable.
