Survey of fungi associated with corn seeds from different towns of Nueva Viscaya [Philippines]
1984
Aquino, M.B.
Thirteen fungal species were recorded from the seed samples: Wonder corn, Philippine Glutinous, Philippine DMR-2, Philippine DMR Composite 1, MIT-4, BPI variety 1, UPCA variety 1, and popcorn. The most infected corn cultivars were those recorded from Bambang, Quezon, Solano, Villaverde, Bagabag and Bayombong. Fusarium moniliforme Link., Saccharomyces sp. Mayen, Cladosporium herbarum (pers.) Lk., Curvularia lunata Boedjn., Verticillium dahliae Kleb, Cephalosporium sp. Corda, Colletotrichum dematium (FR.), Grove and Diplodia maydis (Schw.) Lev. were reported to be associated with corn seeds while Pennicillium spp., Aspergillus spp.; Rhizopus sp., Mucor sp. and Synnematium sp. were known common saprophytic and laboratory contaminants. Between dry and blotter test method used in this study, the latter proved to be better since seeds were incubated, providing proper stimuli for germination of the conidia and initiation of fruition. However, blotter test method favored the development of saprophytic fungi over the pathogenic organisms
