Utilizing mangrove for rice cultivation in Peninsular Malaysia

The present day mangrove swamps in Peninsular Malaysia represents the remnants of this unique vegetation. The decrease in area is largely due to the utilization of the mangrove swamps for many purposes by man. Many areas have been reclaimed for agriculture, some very successfully with crops which are yielding well, while some are unsuccessful and left ugly scars in the landscape. The mangrove muds are saline and often potentially acid sulphate as well. These two properties combined together present problems in utilizing the mangrove for agriculture. Rice cultivation on reclaimed mangrove swamps has enjoyed varying success because of the peculiar properties in the mangrove swamps. The need to keep the potential acid sulphate soils moist for most of the time makes rice cultivation as one of the more suitable crops on reclaimed mangrove swamps. Such a need for moist conditions limits the range of suitable crops to grow on reclaimed mangrove areas. Even with such severe limitations to crop growth, reclaimed mangrove swamps do have very good potential for the right crops when reclamation is done properly and the limitations are brought under control
