Drying of some commercial Philippine bamboos

Scraping did not improve the air and kiln drying characteristic of round or split yellow bamboo, bayog and polevault bamboo. However, scraped bikal, either in round or split from dried faster than unscraped materials. The middle and top portions of the culm in the first three species dried 1.3 to 2.5 times faster than the butt portion. There was no difference in drying rate among the butt, middle and top sections whether scraped or unscraped round and split bikal. In all species studied, splitting the culms into slats hastened drying 1.2 to 2.0 times faster. Bayog was the most difficult to dry species, especially the butt in round form. Bikal and polevault bamboo were the least problematic in so far as drying was concerned. Culm wall thickness seemed to be the dominant factor affecting the rate of drying bamboo. Specific gravity increased towards the top while shrinkage decreased towards the butt. Moisture content decreased towards the top of bamboo culm. End split, barrel checks and collapse occurred in round bamboo during drying. Collapse occurred more at the top of relatively immature or young bamboo culms
