Behavior of tobacco in soil applied with high amount of copper [Philippines]

Tobacco seedlings did not grow properly when 200 ppm or more Cu was applied to the soil; 400 to 600 ppm Cu addition to the soil proved very detrimental to the sprouting of the young seedlings. Within the range of the treatments in this experiment, the copper in the resin materials did not seem to be released in sizeable quantities to be highly or instantly toxic to germinating seeds or to the young seedlings. But there was evidence that the copper in the exchange resins was available to the seedlings. The copper content of the plant correspondingly increased with increasing amounts of copper applied to the soil either as Cu-resin or CuSO4. The manganese content of the plant was also found to increase quite parallel to the increase in copper in the tissues analyzed
