Quality of silage from winter rye intensively fertilized with nitrogen

The nitrogen fertilization was applied as urea and ammonium nitrate at the rates of 0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg N per hectare and those of phosphorus and potassium amounted to 80 kg P2O5 and 120 kg K2O per hectare. The rates and forms of nitrogen fertilization caused considerable changes in the chemical composition of rye green matter. The crude protein, ether extract and ash contents in silages from rye were higher and those of crude fibre, N-free extract and carotene were lower than in the green fodder. In the ensiling process there was a considerable decreasing of true protein content. Increasing the nitrogen fertilization rate slightly decreased the silage quality, especially owing to the ammonium nitrate fertilization
