Rates of phosphorus fertilization of up to 72 kg/ha applied over a number of locations and years were found to bring in returns that were economically warranted. Effectiveness of phosphorus fertilization was found to increase with decreasing amounts of available phosphorus in the soil but was unaffected by rating of a soil in terms of its suitability for agricultural purposes. An equalized balance of phosphorus was reached at rates of 30 to 60 kg P2O5/ha/year, depending on crop yields
