Studies on the resistant characters of yard long bean, Vigna unguiculata (L.) walp. sub sp. sesquipedalis (L.) Verde to the bean fly, Ophiomyia phaseoli (Tryon)

The result indicated that accession no. 105, 044 and 090 were moderately resistant group and accession no. 105,044 and variety KU. no. 7 were low resistant group and accession no. 011, 013 and 113 were susceptible group. The density of trichome showed tendency to effect the bean fly infestation, but conspicuous influences because of unsuitable trichome shape. The thickness of leaf seemed to be negatively correlated with the number of larvae in the plant. Other parameters such as leaf area, leaf moisture, leaf dry weight, stem size and stem moisture indistinctively affect larvae infestation. All of the tested plants significantly responsed to the larvae infestation inside the stem by producing new cortical tissue in order to recover from the damage, but the KU. no. 7 variety showed the highest degree of recovering when the number of larvae were not too high. This character should be utilized as the insect resistant parameter for the selection of bean fly resistant varieties of yard long bean. For the cultivation of KU. no. 7 as the bean fly resistant variety, the integrated control for reducing population of bean fly should be recommended
