A study on genesis, morphology and mineral components of yellow and red soils planted to cassava in northeast Thailand was carried out in 1981. The red soils were of the Warn and Khorat series. The results revealed that this soils could be divided into 2 distinct groups according to major recognizable features such as texture and chemical properties which were closely related to the amount of clay separate. Pak Chong and Chok Chai series were clayey soil and showed better chemical characteristics than Khorat, Yasothon and Warin series. Nevertheless, all soil series could be described as acidic soils with a low fertility status. The influence of land use was clearly shown in these soils. These soils could be tentatively classified as Ultisols. Types of mineral and the influence of particular minerals to cause red and yellow colors in these soils were presently studied
