A short-day insensitive type with a long vegetative growth period is desired in jute (Corchorus capsularis). In India the inheritance and response to short days were studied in a day-neutral jute mutant, TCJ-5, photoperiod insensitivity being inherited as a simple recessive trait. Irrespective of the time of sowing, the mutant grew vegetatively for 100 days before flowering and was insensitive to 8 hr day length up to 100 days after sowing. By comparison the parent and check varieties had a basic vegetative phase of only 20-30 days after which they flowered in response to short days
