Female fertility and seed set in Dioscorea alata L. [water yam]

By adopting staggered planting the synchronization of flowering in male and female Dioscorea alata L. was obtained, and through hand pollination a capsule set of 80.1 % and a seed set of 47.5 % were achieved. The lack of natural seed set is attributed to non-synchronization of flowering between male and female plants, absence of natural pollinators and the practice of cultivating a single clone in localized areas by farmers. The seed production and successful raising of seedling populations in D. alata is reported for the first time
