Kaminsky, M.
This paper tries to depict the present overall situation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a whole, as well as that referring to the different types of countries composing the Region. The overall global description relies on the use of the most updated statistics belonging to four different fields of greatest interest at the moment: total and agricultural production; external debt and its service; external sector and balance of payments; and prices and terms of trade. For three other fields of interest, concerning the structural characteristics of the countries in the Region (Food and Food Security; External Sector; and Employment, Incomes and General Agriculture), the analyses proceed in terms of comparisons among the three different types of countries which the base study detected and validated, using a set of about fifty single and synthetic indicators. When the tests of hypothesis concerning differences of means among groups indicated, the inferences referred to the Region as a whole; otherwise such statistics were taken advantage of, for characterizing in a unique way each type of country. A very short summary of the main methodological traits of the study is included; among them the following can be cited: the typification procedures employed, the synthetic indicators constructed and estimated, and the advantages and limitations of the type of inferences made
