The analysis of the starch content of the winter two-row barley genotypes which have high grain returns, lower stalks and well formed grain showed as follows: 1/ the content of starch varies within the range from 55,45% to 62,55%, which indicates that the improvement of barley can significantly affect its growth; 2/ as regards improvements the content of starch has not been sufficiently explained which is indicated by negative correlative coefficients between the content of starch in relation to the content of class I grains, natural grain return and class I grain return in the analysed selected material; 3/ because there is a possibility to select plants with good quality grains by the content of starch in the early stages of barley improvement, this characteristic should be payed attention to particularly from the point of view of heredity
