Relationship between root length and nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium uptake in young pea plants (Pisum sativum L.)

Three pea (Pisum sativum) varieties were used in this investigation: Petit Provancal, Kelvedon Wonder and Novosadski kasni 915. Seeds were let to germinate 6 days in sand, in a thermoregulator, at 25 deg C. During the following 16 days the plants were grown in water culture in full nutrient solution. The first samples for the analysis were taken the day when they were transferred into nutrient solution and then every four days, up to 22 days. Varieties were found to differ notably by the root system development rate. The root system of Novosadski kasni 915 was the least developed at the end of the investigation. No notable dependence between the degree of root system development and concentrations of investigated elements in the above-ground parts and root was found. During the first 10 days of the investigation variety Kelvedon Wonder adopted N, P, K and Mg the most intensively per unit of root length, followed by variety Novosadski kasni 915, i.e. those were the varieties having the shortest root systems in these periods. It was concluded that pea varieties in particular growth and developmental periods substituted shorter roots with higher adoption intensity per unit of root length in order to satisfy their needs of mineral matters.
