Cytogenetic characteristics of black currant (Ribes nigrum) Cv. Silvergiter's

Analysis of the meiosis on two species of the black currant -Silvergiter's Schwarte and Silvergiter's Zwarte and analysis of the shape of the pollen and of its germinability were performed. Very high percentage of normality was noticed. Differences between the varieties exist and they may affect differences in the functional ability of their pollen and, consequently, the differences in their fertility. The variety Silvergiter's Schwarte has a higher percentage of bivalents in the metaphase and of normal tetrads and slight lagging of chromosomes in the anaphase and in telophase 1 and 2, as well as a twice as high germinability of the pollen. In the variety Silvergiter's Zwarte a higher percentage of lagging of chromosomes in the anaphase 1 was noticed, as well as a higher percentage of univalents and a higher number of abnormal tetrads.
