The influence of selenium deficiency on the growth of chickens reared as broilers

The feed given to chickens in this experiment was very deficient in selenium (0.01 ppm), but it contained sufficient quantities of vitamin E. Chickens given feed poor in selenium during the first 7 days of fattening had a reduced weight gain in the third and fourth week of life. Much greater stagnation of growth was found in chickens given feed poor in selenium during the first 14 or 21 days. Reduced weight gain was noticed already in the second week. Change to feeding with enough selenium could compensate for slower gain only partially. At the end of fattening chickens of these groups were 180 g lighter than those of the control group. In this research data about selenium content of the feed of layers from whose eggs chickens included in this experiment were hatched were not known. Reduced weight gain in the second week points to the possibility that parents too were fed with feed poor in selenium.
