Essential oils content and their composition, as well as citronellal contents in 16 genotypes of the medicinal plant balm (Melissa officinalis L.) of varied origins introduced in experimental fields of Backi Petrovac (Yugoslavia) have been investigated. Samples were taken in 1982 and 1983. In 1982 essential oils quantities varied from 0.053 to 0.165% and in 1983 from 0.064 to 0.330%. Essential oils have 13-15 components, 5 of which have been identified. The most responsible for physiological effects out of the identified essential oil components is citronellal and its quantities were from 3.42 to 8.82%. Citronellal quantities are not correlated with essential oil quantities.
