Studies on field resistance of cacao (Theobroma cacao) varieties to Phytophthora palmivora (Butl.) infections

Individual yield record and blackpod disease susceptibility under field conditions of mature seedling populations of 63 crosses involving Upper Amazons, Amelonado and Trinitario selections were investigated for ten years. Several yield and blackpod disease resistance patterns in the varieties were observed. Selected Upper Amazon types crossed to Amelonado and some inter-Amazon crosses were much higher yielding with low b1758lackpod infection rates than in the selected Trinitarios crossed to Upper Amazons or Amelonado. More high yielding trees with low susceptibility to blackpod disease infection segregated in selected resistant crosses than in susceptible ones. In the low yielding trees, high or low blackpod disease infection rates occurred in similar manner as in the high yielders. Infection rates appeared to be independent of high or low cumulative yield of the individual
