Germplasm conservation at the Bunso Agricultural station - Ghana

Conservation of plant genetic resources at Bunso, in the form of seeds and living plants is discussed. It is relatively easier to conserve seeds because they take less space and can be stored for longer periods under reduced moisture content and temperature, without losing their viability. Two categories of seeds are stored. The orthodox seeds (like tomato, maize, cowpeas and seeds of most crop plants) are those that can tolerate low moisture content and temperature, and the recalcitrant (like oil palm, rubber and seeds of most tree crops and forest trees) those that cannot. The orthodox seeds are kept in cold storage at -10 deg C. Germination tests and regeneration are done on the seeds when viability is below 80%. It was observed that oil containing seeds deteriorate faster under the same conditions of moisture content and temperature than non-oil containing seeds
