In situ dry-matter disappearance and protein degradability of yellow maize, wheat bran and guinea grass (Panicum maximum) in the rumen of cattle

Five adult non-producing crossbred cows of about 350 kg body weight fitted with rumen cannulae were used. The rates of disappearance of dry matter and protein from yellow maize were very slow. The lower protein disappearance may be due to the 'zein' protein in maize which was degraded to a lesser extent in rumen. In case of wheat bran low rate and extent of dry matter disappearance may be attributed to high crude fibre content in wheat bran. The rate of disappearance of dry matter and protein from guinea grass was slow up to1376 12 hr of incubation in the rumen and thereafter improved steadily.
