Successful development of any country's agricultural sector is dependent, to a large degree, on objective assessment of its land resources and an understanding of the properties and behaviour of its soils that influence crop growth and fertilizer use. Progress in land use can only be achieved when pertinent research findings are made available to all concerned - researchers, teachers, farmers, businessmen and administrators. Despite the involvement of various agencies, both public and private, in soil research since the inception of the state of Lebanon, there has been little mutual sharing or awareness of the outcome of such endeavors. Findings are published, mainly in French or in English, in a diversity of sources with limited local circulation. These are rarely known about and less frequently read. Effective communication would eliminate duplication of resear1881ch efforts and lead to more efficient use of research funds.
