The use of Leucas aspera spreng and Curcuma longa L extracts in the treatment of Trichophyton verrucosum ringworm in cattle

Chloroform extracts of the plants Leucas aspera Spreng and Curcuma longa L in the form of 0.5 and 10% ointment, respectively, were tested for their therapeutic value in the treatment of Trichophyton verrucosum ringworm in cattle; Jadit-H (Hoechst) containing 10% buclosamide, 2% salicylic acid and 0.5% hydrocortisone (w/w) and 2% salicylic acid in 7% tincture of iodine (w/v) were also tested for comparison. Out of 27 calves naturally infected with T. verrucosum, four groups of six were treated by those therapeutic agents by daily topical application; the remaining three calves served as untreated controls. All the agents were effective and showed no undesirable effects, but, dif1221fered in the time taken for clinical, microscopical and cultural evidence of clearing. L. aspera extract appeared to be the most effective, followed by Jadit-H, C. longa extract and salicylic acid in tincture of iodine, in that order.
