Effects of varieties and nitrogen fertilizer on yield of irrigated wheat in Northern Nigeria

Seven spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) lines/varieties, suited to Nigerian conditions, were grown under irrigation at Kadawa, Kano State, Nigeria in the 1978/79 and 1979/80 seasons with three levels of nitrogen fertilizer applied at either the vegetative or post-anthesis stage. Mexican line 12300 x LR64A-8156/Nor 67 with a grain yield of 4523 kg/ha was the highest yielding line, but not significantly higher than Mexican variety Siete Cerros. Florence Aurore 8193 which originated from the Mediterranean region and which is known to have good breadmaking qualities was the lowest yielding. The attributes responsible for these yield differences are discussed. Application of 100 kg N/ha increased grain yield over 50 kg N/ha application by 10.6% but was not significantly different from that of 150 kg N/ha.
