Voluntary feed intake and digestibility of roughage in buffaloes and cattle

Two experiments were conducted to compare the efficiency of feed utilization in buffaloes and cattle. Four swamp buffaloes and six Holstein cows for Experiment 2 were employed in the present experiment. They were fed roughage alone, either orchard-grass hay or sugarcane tops in one experiment, and rice straw or orchard grass hay in the other experiment. More sugarcane top were consumed than orchard grass hay by both species in Experiment 1, and no difference was found between species. Significantly more orchard grass hay than rice straw was consumed by both species, and cattle took more feed than buffaloes in Experiment 2. No significant difference between the two species of animals in digestibility of rice straw in buffaloes than in cattle was observed in Experiment 2, though1123there was no difference between species in the case of feeding on orchard grass hay where the animals seemed to be kept at a sufficient level of nutrition.
