Effectiveness of various acaricides against carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval)

A colony of carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisd.) was collected from roses grown at the Station and raised for susceptibility tests against various acaricides. The acaricides were Amitraz, Azocyclotin, Binapacryl, Carbophenothion, Cyhexatin, Methamidophos, Propargite and Triazophos. Laboratory and greenhouse assessments showed that Carbophenothion was ineffective, probably due to cross-resistance. Amitraz and Propargite was fast becoming ineffective. The organotins, Azocyclotin and Cyhexatin, together with Binapacryl and Methamidophos were highly effective. To preserve the effectiveness of the existing acaricides, a more deliberate use of the predatory mite, Amblyseius sp. was considered
