Components of grain yield of semidwarf and standard height cultivars of wheat were studied in three field experiments at Lincoln College farms, New Zealand. The semidwarf cultivars Rongotea and Oroua produced the highest and the lowest grain yield respectively, indicating that semidwarfism did not necessarily contribute to the highest grain yield as commonly believed to do. The most influential yield components were grain size for Rongotea, ear number for Oroua, and grain set and grain size for the standard height Kopara. A low population of 250 plants per M(2) improved various yield components of individual plants, whereas a high population of 380 plants per m(2) tended to produce a larger yield per unit area. Irrigation significantly improved grain yield through its favourable effects on ear number and grain number per plant.
