Agro economic performance of cropping patterns under rainfed conditions at Farming System Research Site, Kalikapur, Ishurdi (Bangladesh)

Five designed cropping patterns were tested at farmers' field of Farming Systems Research Site, Kalikapur, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh for 2-3 years. Three patterns were in Sara highland, two in Gopalpur medium highland and one in Ishurdi medium highland. Maize + M. bean-Fallow-Wheat, the alternative cropping pattern was most profitable in sara highland which gave 142% higher gross margin than farmer's existing pattern B. Aus rice (L)-Fallow-Mustard with improved management practices. The test pattern also gave the highest marginal benefit cost ratio (6.02). The second profitable pattern in that soil and landtype was B. Aus rice (L)-Fallow-Lentil+Mustard where Lentil+Mustard mixed crops gave more than five times gross margin over Mustard (Tk. 2079/ha) as sole crop in existing pattern. The productivity and returns of the pattern can be increased by using 140% Lentil+33% Mustard seed ratio. The two other cropping patterns one for each Gopalpur and Ishurdi Soil Series were not biologically stable as the second crop Transplanted aman rice failed to establish in two years due to short rainfall.
