Correlation, path coefficient and selection indices in open-pollinated maize

In a study with nineteen exotic open-pollinated maize varieties, positive and significant correlation of kernel yield per plant was observed with days to silking, days to maturity, plant height, ear height and number of ear per plant at the genotypic and phenotypic levels. Harvest index was negatively and significantly correlated with all the components. Though 1000-kernel weight had a positive and insignificant correlation with yield, its direct contribution to the yield followed that of number of ear plant, the latter being the highest contributor. Simultaneous selection for kernel yield, plant height and number of ear per plant exhibited maximum relative efficiency of 114.4 percent over straight selection. Single trait indirect selection appeared possible on the basis of days to silking with 103 percent R.E.
