Studies on the relationship between root growth and yield in maize 1. Relationship between the growth and absorption ability of the roots and the growth and development of the above-ground parts of maize

Primary roots and the first to fourth layers of secondary roots of maize (Zea mays) emerged during seedling stage, the fifth and the sixth layers appeared from elongation stage till boating stage, and the seventh layer and those above (i.e. aerial roots) emerged from boating stage till tasseling stage. In each stage of growth the upper layer roots which emerged newly had strong absorption ability. The total absorbing area of roots and the leaf area index increased with plant growth, and the former reached the maximum value earlier than the later. Dry matter accumulation in above ground parts increased rapidly after elongation to the initial milky maturity stage. For the dry weight of roots, the tendency was similiar to that of shoots: the weight came to maximum value at late milky maturily stage and declined gradually thereafter. The growth of roots was a process in which the above-ground parts and the under-ground parts influenced and promoted each other.
