A number of Xanthomonas oryzae strains were cultured in NA medium for 0, 4 and 23 days, representing logarithmic growth, stable growth and death stages respectively. Then they were inoculated to in vitro calli of somatic rice cells, using inoculation of bacterium-free NA medium as check. The pathogens at the logarithmic growth stage showed the highest toxicity to the calli. Their exudations also appeared toxic. The best growth stage of the pathogens used as selection pressure for disease-resistant calli was thus established.
