Morphology of immature seeds and development in vitro in Dendrobium candidum

The embryos of Dendrobium Wall ex Lindl. collected from fruits during two to six months after pollination were in the globular stage. But, they were different one another in shape, cell number, content of starch grains in the cells and ultrastructure. The rate of germination of the immature seeds was 95% in vitro. The protocorms could be formed from the germinated seeds. The protocorms were able to produce seedling or callus and the callus was able to differentiate into seedling again. During seed germination, the starch was gradually reduced in the cells at the top of the embryo. The reduction of starch may be closely related to the formations of the meristem and the cotyledon.
