Cowpea variety PI 1239, a vigorous spreading type was defoliated by removing one or two leaflets at the vegetative and reproductive stages and throughout growth. Defoliation had no significant effect on plant dry weight, the number of seeds per pod, the average pod length and the 100-seed weight, but affected the leaf area index at the vegetative and reproductive stages. Number of leaves removed affected the total grain yield per plot and number of pods per plant significantly. One leaflet out of each trifoliated leaf can be defoliated throughout growth without affecting yield. Mechanical leaf-eating by insects up to one third intensity throughout growth will not affect yield
