Feed ingredients of cereals, animal protein concentrates and oilseeds were assayed with chick, rat and pig to determine their digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME). Similar DE and ME were obtained for rats and pigs for the cereals while the chick ME value were non-significantly lower. Species differences were observed in the utilization of the ME of the high protein supplements between the rat and pig on one hand, and the chick on the other. This indicates a clear need for the use of ME values determined directly with chicks in the formulation of ingredients for poultry. Variable DE and ME values were obtained for the different oilseeds depending on variations in composition particularly in crude fibres and residual oil contents
