The effect of defoliation on yield and stalk sugar of maize (Zea mays L.)
1977
Ampong-Nyarko, K.
The effect of defoliation on the yield and stalk sugar of maize was evaluated. Defoliation was begun ten days after 50% silking. Defoliation reduced stalk sugar, grain yield and dry matter accumulation in the cob and husk. Removal of all leaves decreased grain yield by 81%, 33% when top half leaves were removed, and 25% for removal of bottom half leaves. A decrease in stalk dry weight for all treatment after the 30th day after defoliation was observed
