Chemical weed control in maize (Zea mays) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) intercrop

The effectiveness of application of four different rates of the herbicide 'Galex' (metolachlor and metobromuron formulation) in controlling weeds in maize and cowpea intercrop using a randomised complete block design was studied. This was compared with manual weeding and no weeding controls. There was significant reduction in the number and dry weight of weeds as the rate of herbicide application increased. The dry weight of cowpea shoots from un-weeded plots was not significantly different from that of plots with highest herbicide application but significantly lower than that of manually weeded plot. Dry weights of maize shoots did not differ significantly but highest dry weight of shoots and highest average yield of maize (559.0 g/plot) and cowpea (117 g/plot) were obtained when weeds were manually controlled. Percentage effectiveness of the herbicide on broad grasses, but not on broad leaved weeds, at the highest rate of 54%, was significantly different from that at the lowest rate of 29%
