Pre-harvest insect infestation of drying maize (Zea mays L.) grown on the University farm, Legon [Ghana]
1988
Yeboah, J.
Insect infestation and damage to pre-harvest maize were studied. Some eight insect types were identified as major pre-harvest pests. These include Ahasverus, Carpophilus, Mycetaea, Sitophilus, Corcyra, Cryptophlebia, Mussidia and Pyroderces. Insect infestation was high well before normal harvesting. Increase in moisture content of grain resulted in highly significant correlation with grain infestation but cob infestation had no significant influence on cob damage. Pre-harvest insect infestation of drying maize is dictated by the time of harvesting which is dependent on the grain moisture content
