Effect of colchicine on growth and yield of winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus (L.) DC.)

A trial to produce a dwarf self-supporting variety of the winged bean through the use of colchicine, a chemical mutagen is reported. Seeds from two accessions, Kade 6/16 (Local) and UPS 122 were given 0.0, 0.005, 0.05 and 0.5% colchicine treatment. Seed germination, branching, nodulation, total dry matter, flowering and podding were not affected by the treatment but the effect on plant height, leaf production, and length of internodes was stimulatory at the early growth stages, and inhibitory at later stages, with no marked differences in the effect of the different concentrations. UPS 122 (at 0.005% conc) flowered 8 days earlier, but late flowering was observed in Kade 6/16, 33 days later than the control (at 0.5% conc). Flower abortion was highest with highest concentration. No clearcut response to the different concentrations was shown in pod length, number of seeds per pod, 20-seed weight and shelling percentage
