Contribution to classification and evaluation of the Low-elevation rangelands of Western Epirus, Greece

This study refers to the identification of subtypes on the basis of species composition and as well as the productivity sites on the basis of soil depth and inclination in rangelands of the low elevation zone in Western Epirus, Greece. After several reconnaissance tours in the study area, 16 representative sites were selected where vegetation and soil were studied in detail. In total, they were identified 8 subtypes as follows: (1) Subtype of Hyparrhenia hirta, a grassland. (2) Subtype of Phlomis fruticosa, a phryganaland. (3) Subtype of Salvia triloba, a phryganalandnd. (4) Subtype of Cistus incanus, a phryganaland. (5) Subtype of Quercus coccifera, a shrubland. (6) Subtype of evergreen Sclerophyllus shrubs, a shrubland. (7) Subtype of Deciduous shrubs, a shrubland. (8) Subtype of Quercus aegilops, a forest range. These 8 subtypes were evaluated for their forage production and grazing capacity. Also, three sites were identified in each subtype representing different productivity and suitability for improvement. It was found that the distribution of subtypes was largely affected by the parent material and the soil content in free calcium carbonate; also, the Phlomis fruticosa and Quercus coccifera subtypes were the most abundant and productive while the other shrubland subtypes were the least productive for livestock
