Selection for yield in two tomato cultivars for processing (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill)

The experimental work was carried out at the university farm of Thessaloniki during the years 1982 and 1983. The objective of this study was the exploration of effectiveness of the honeycomb selection method within the tomato cultivars for processing Super California and AT-30. During the first year, honeycomb mass selection was applied to 742 plants from each cultivar using selection intensities 1.1% for Super California and 1.6% for AT-30. In the following year, the replicated honeycomb design R-7 was applied in order to compare the selected families with the control cultivar. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) The best family outyielded Super California by 32.4% and AT-30 by 25.6%. (2) The gain obtained through mass selection of the first year, 12.7% for the first cultivar and 12.8% for the second, may be considered high. (3) After one year of selection for yield, the quality characteristics in both cultivars remained at the same high level, as before. (4) Maintenance and improvement of the two cultivars were attained through honeycomb selection
