Pyrenochaeta terrestris on onion, first record in Greece
1986
Laskaris, D. (Benaki Phytopathological Inst., Kifisia-Athens (Greece))
In July 1985 a sample of diseased onion plants was received from a field near Thespies (Boeotia) at the Mycology Laboratory of the Benaki Phytopathological Institute. According to the farmer's description the plants had extensive root damage and remained stunted. The problem was noticed in late spring. The roots of the sample were dry and of pinkish colour. This symptom and the description of the appearence of the damage in the field, led us to investigate the possibility of attack by the fungus Pyrenochaeta terrestris (Hansen) Gorenz, Walker and Larson, which causes the disease known as pink root of onion. Watson's method (5) slightly modified was used to isolate and identify the pathogen
